The Laboratory of theoretical physics in Toulouse has an opening for a three-year PhD position in the field of theoretical one-dimensional quantum physics. The starting date is in the Fall 2023; applicants should hold master degree before that date. Eighty years ago, quantum physics of one-dimensional many-body systems was an exotic topic of mostly academic importance. This status has nowadays changed due to remarkable experimental achievements in the field of cold atomic gases and quantum materials. Quantum physics in one dimension has become a pillar of modern low-energy physics [1,2]. It exemplifies how theoretical predictions can be probed in the lab and vice versa -- how experiments open new directions in theoretical studies [3,4].

The aim of this PhD thesis is to theoretically address various questions in one-dimensional many-body systems motivated by recent experiments , to make decisive progress in their microscopic description, as well as to propose new experiments. We will focus on the motion of a distinguishable quantum particle (an impurity) through a many-body one-dimensional bath. With this project we aim at developing a theory for the impurity relaxation dynamics, as well as the driven dynamics, and the formation of their bound states (bipolarons). These fundamental questions are relevant for a large class of phenomena. The restricted phase space and the existence of special many-body models in one dimension with many conserved quantities make the quantum impurity problem interesting, often characterised by an unconventional behaviour—different from the higher-dimensional realisations. The program will be carried out thanks to the combination of state-of-the-art methods from the theory of many-body correlated systems.

The selected candidate will become a member of the group dealing with strongly correlated systems with an expertise in a broad range of topics in condensed matter physics, such as magnetism, superconductivity, and low-dimensional quantum matter.
